Songwriter tip:

Somewhere along the way lots of music critics and artists themselves decided that lyrical content should mostly be overly complex/poetic in several different genres

While there is a time and place for this, this is widely not true. Look at the biggest songs in every genres history, and even the billboard charts rn for so many genres, it’s actually quite the opposite.

Most people want lyrics to be relatable to their everyday lives

Complexity breaks the average listeners flow and music, at the end the of the day, is all about establishing an emotional connection

I’m not saying make bland, boring lyrics. I’m just saying maybe work towards prioritizing your listeners heart strings/feelings instead of impressing them intellectually if you want your music to stick

Of course there are niche pockets within every musical world where extremely rhyme dense and complex lyricism is appreciated and cherished, and that’s awesome. I don’t mean to take away from that

A great analogy for this is an extremely mechanically gifted guitar player learning how to dial back the shredding and sweeping to let the music speak first. Because only a small percentage of people want to hear that, most people want the song to be effortless and speak without distraction

My advice is for people trying to reach a broader audience, it’s still just as challenging to make something simple sound good as it is to make something complex sound intricate. Don’t be ashamed to write for the everyday listener!
