I understand that sentiment (I typically fill out my mail-in ballot ahead and turn it in on election day without waiting, too). Let me ask you this: theoretically how about a system where:

a) you have to either mail in/hand in your ballot early or by close of polls on election day
b) you have to either personally mail in or hand in your own ballot, other people can’t do it for you

Seems like completely fair rules that preserve the convenience your talking about while removing gray areas of confusion that currently plague the system
