Fifth generation Illinois farmer on perpetual government handouts to farmers:

“Even though farm country is pro-Trump still, this is socialism stuff.”

The federal government will giveaway $55 billion tax dollars to America’s farmers this year, accounting for more than 1/4 of total farm income. That means that for ever one dollar of farm income, more than 25 cents comes directly from the government. In contrast, before Trump killed subsidies for electric vehicles to reward his big oil cronies, government subsidies for EVs totaled $10 billion and covered about 11 percent of the total cost.

And the economic conditions that are cited to justify government handouts to farmers is largely self-inflicted: tariffs, trade wars, real wars, and government intervention in the markets that promote inefficiency. In other words, the government is the primary reason for the need for government subsidies.

It reminds me of 2 Vietnam War Veterans who were sitting in the waiting area at the VA hospital in Asheville with me during the 2020 election cycle. One said to the other, “we’ve got to get Trump reelected so he can keep fighting socialism.” I thought to myself, “you’re on government property, inside a government building, sitting on a government chair, waiting to see a government doctor, in order to get your government medications, and you want to fight socialism?”

So, government handouts to billionaires and big corporations are wholesome “incentives,” and government handouts to farmers are government created necessities, but anything the government does for working class Americans is evil socialism and anyone who takes government help is a worthless lazy freeloader?

To paraphrase H. L. Mencken, no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.
