Looking for the worst advice you were ever given about growing a business.
The one you actually followed for months before working out it was nonsense.
I will go first: post more.
Something I did not expect after two years of writing scripts for other people:
the videos that book calls are almost never the ones the client is proud of.
The polished one gets compliments. The one where they answer a boring question properly gets the DM.
Nobody buys because they understood you.
They buy because they felt understood.
One is about how well you explained it. The other is about how well you listened first.
I have looked at a lot of small channels that suddenly took off.
4 things they all did before it happened:
1. Picked one question and answered it 10 different ways.
2. Stopped changing the thumbnail style every video.
3. Made the title a promise instead of a description.
4. Kept going 15 videos past the point it felt pointless.
The market does not care how hard the work was.
It pays for how rare it is. Those are two different things and most people spend a decade confusing them.
Nobody wants to hear this, but most businesses do not have a marketing problem.
They have a memory problem. Nobody remembers them 20 minutes after closing the tab, and no amount of extra spend fixes that.
A client posted 4 videos in his first month with us.
Two of them beat every video already on his channel, and one booked calls in the same week it went up.
The channel did not change. What changed was which question each video answered.
Everyone wants a bigger audience.
Almost nobody wants a smaller one that buys.
Pick the second and the first shows up anyway. It does not work in reverse.
Looking for the best YouTube channel you have ever seen from someone selling a service. Not a full time creator. An actual business owner.
I want to see who is doing it well, because most of them are genuinely terrible at it.
Drop the channel and I will tell you what they are getting right.
I have written hundreds of scripts for my clients and myself.
5 things I would tell anyone starting today:
1. The title picks the audience. The video only keeps them.
2. Nobody ever quit watching because it was too simple.
3. Your best idea is the one you are bored of explaining.
4. Write the ending before you write the middle.
5. One video that books a call beats ten that get watched.
Unpopular opinion: being busy is a pricing problem.
Nobody who charges enough is working 12 hour days. They are working 5 and turning things down.
Busy is what happens when the number is too low to say no.
