I miss the days where you’d buy an entire album because of one song you liked, and because it cost you $20, you’d listen to the whole album.
And if you were in your car, it might be only one of a few albums you had access to. And after some time, the songs you didn’t think much of on first listen, become some of your favorite songs on the album.
Or the movie you saw that you didn’t really like at first. But then you saw it on cable, and it started to grow on you. And over time it became one of your favorite movies that you can’t help but quote.
Now if something doesn’t grab you, it’s on to the next. Nothing has a chance to “grow on you” anymore.
Some songs, or movies, or even people require time to grow on you. And I suspect people are treating relationships the same way as media. Because we have so many options at our fingertips, it makes more sense to just move on to the next if you don’t instantly like something.
Familiarity breeds fondness.
And the less things we’re familiar with, the more fondness has to happen instantly for it to happen at all. And that’s a shame because some of the best art — and people — require a few viewings/listens/interactions to truly appreciate.
