What we thought would take a few months to fix and fancy up will, it turns out, require a lifetime of labor. But Christ is okay with that. He was, after all, raised in the home of a carpenter. And he’ll take his sweet time.

The Hebrew verb yarad means “to go down.” Jonah yarads big time. When God commands him to go to Nineveh, Jonah goes down to Joppa, goes down to a ship, and goes down into the hold of the ship. Each time yarad is used. But Jonah isn't finished. He finally goes down into the sea, into the belly of the fish, and into the face of death itself. Then, and only then, he "remembers Yahweh" (2:7).

Jonah’s descent is the human condition. We too remember the Lord, but it's usually after we’ve gone down so far that the only option left is to look up. When we do, there is the Lord, looking us in the eye with grace and mercy. For he is the God who meets us at the bottom.
