I take your point, but critique should also lead to (re-)evaluation. The creeds and later musings, especially when taken together, mix and match concepts such as infallibility, inerrancy, submission to the text, etc. Add on to this some American cultural baggage, a deserved-contempt for academic nit-picking, and a 19th century view of history. I don’t think invoking “ancient biography” resolves any of these tensions since that is not a defined genre in the Greco-Roman world.
