Harmony Bloom - Gorgeous Polyrhythmic Midi Sequencer (AUv3) Giveaway

I’m SUPER impressed by Harmony Bloom by Mario Nieto (@MarioNietoWorld) , which just got released for iOS.

This is one of the most interesting sequencers released for iOS (AUv3 - iPad & M1 Mac, no iPhone version) in recent memory, priced at $10.

Here I am modulating it with an LFO and it is played by just 2 notes on the keyboard. I will have a rough and ready spoken walkthrough on this on my Patreon shortly, maybe a more polished spoken YouTube walkthrough too further down the line.

Note that this is also available as standalone / AU / VST3 for Windows and Mac, for €30. If you have the $10 iOS version, you will be able to use the iPad version in Mac hosts which load AUv3, like Logic Pro, as long as you have an M1 Mac running the required MacOS (11.0 or higher).

🟪 What is it?

An MPE sampler and touchscreen keyboard that can record any audio played into it when loaded as an fx, and can load wav files.

🟪 Here’s what I like about it:

Expressive, MPE keyboard for on-screen playing

Loads as an fx app for fast recording

Very intuitive

Beautiful filters

Envelope for attack and release

Filter, X axis, Y axis, velocity and envelope can all be used for modulation.

Looks beautiful, multitouch playing favours the iPad touch interface.

Text still nice and legible even at smaller window sizes. At small sizes you can use an arrow to toggle between the main view and the keyboard view.

‘Tuning’ button allows for coarse / fine tuning and setting of root note

Pitch bend is easily adjustable and goes up to +/-48 semitones - this is really important to make sure it plays nicely with different MPE controllers.

🟪 Here’s what I think could be improved:

Due to the way the keyboard is designed, you can’t play the same note simultaneously on different octaves onscreen - of course, you can use another instance or use other keyboards.

Keyboard only shows 12 notes - no way to change the width so you have smaller keys and more notes. Again, you can just use an external keyboard, it’s a bit inconvenient though, for me.

Preset menu has no arrows for quick scrolling through presets.

I would like an overdub mode

🟪 Tips

Use busses in an app like AUM to multisample different instruments from your iPad at the same time

On many presets, you might want to adjust the pitch bend to +/-48 to get the onscreen keyboard to behave as you would expect from an MPE keyboard.

Play with the reverse function, cross fade points and loop type for interesting sound design.

Resynthesize any sound by importing and retuning rhythmic loops or textures.

Allowing x axis to modulate panning can be really cool.

Use several instances to make up for the limitations of the inbuilt keyboard.
