I wasn’t even a conservative, and I still felt that (probably to a lesser degree).

And ideology isn’t really at the heart of it. It’s sheepology: unimaginative people following the herd, all with a chip on their shoulder. Nothing more profound than that.

And, at bottom, they don’t believe in truth. That’s the real core of it. No real target for curiosity about the outside.

@jpodhoretz This movie seems to inspire even more self-assured “deep” (conflicting) interpretations than Charles Foster Kane. I suspect the late, great David Bordwell was right to describe Nolan’s method as one of strategic ambiguity in his book on the director’s films.
