Election day comes around in Nigeria, but most registered voters do not show up at their polling units.

A turnout of 4 in 10 registered voters is the highest recorded across Nigeria’s recent off-cycle governorship elections. In the eight states that have held these elections, Kogi, Osun, Ekiti, Imo, Bayelsa, Edo, Ondo and Anambra, voter turnout has remained below 50 per cent every single time.

So, what is driving Nigeria’s persistently low voter turnout?

And with the 2027 general elections approaching, how can more Nigerians be encouraged to vote and participate in the electoral process?

Diphtheria cases have been reported in Plateau State, Nigeria.

Here’s what has happened so far:
- In the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, 23 lives were lost over two weeks, with 143 suspected cases reported.
- Since 2022, Nigeria has had over 61,900 suspected diphtheria cases and 2,150 associated deaths.

Nigeria's economy just recorded its strongest Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate in five years in Q2 2026.

The real GDP was N54.16 trillion in Q2 2026, and the growth rate was also at 4.43%, its highest since Q1 2024.

Nigeria's Q2 2026 real GDP was driven mainly by Trade, Crop Production, and the Real Estate sector.

Women and girls account for more than 60 per cent of trafficking victims worldwide. In Nigeria, where women face limited opportunities in the labour market, traffickers can easily turn the promise of a job into a trap.

Key insights:

- Women were only 40.2 per cent of the global labour force in 2025.

- Sex trafficking made up 52.3 per cent of identified trafficking victims in Nigeria in 2025.

- NAPTIP's rescues of trafficked persons rose 72.4 per cent from 2024 to 2025.

- Traffickers are increasingly recruiting online through fake jobs, scholarships, and loan schemes.

Economic vulnerability doesn't cause trafficking on its own, but it creates the conditions traffickers exploit.

President Tinubu recently suspended three permanent secretaries over a fake agency operating within the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), a month after another fictitious body, the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), was uncovered after more than two years of operation and N1.3 billion in budget allocation.

Key insights:
- PFIPC held meetings with real MDAs, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the EFCC, and engaged foreign diplomats for over two years before its status was questioned.
- PFIPC secured approval to recruit over 300 staff and opened a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) dollar and pound accounts.
- PFIPC was allocated N1.3 billion in the 2026 federal budget, with N802.98 million allocated for personnel alone.

The case shows how a budget allocation can grant financial legitimacy without the underlying legal legitimacy ever being confirmed, and that gap is what allowed PFIPC to operate for years.
