The late Ms Senamile Masango (37) 🕊️🕊️
She passed away on 9 February 2025 after a short illness.
She was known as the “Queen of Science”, Senamile was a pioneering South African nuclear physicist celebrated for her groundbreaking contributions to the field and her passionate advocacy for women in STEM.
She held the following qualifications:
•BSc Honours
•BSc in Physics and Electronics from the University of Zululand
•Postgraduate Diploma in Energy Leadership from Wits Business School
•Diploma in Project Management from IIE Varsity College
She earned her Master’s degree in Nuclear Physics cum laude from the University of the Western Cape (UWC). At the time of her passing, she was a PhD candidate at UWC, conducting advanced research at TRIUMF, Canada’s national particle accelerator centre.
Senamile made history as the first black woman to join an African led research team conducting experiments at CERN, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory. She also served on the Board of the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) and was a member of the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC).
