If you're self-employed, an independent contractor, an entrepreneur or a business owner who makes estimated tax payments, now is a good time to review where you stand.

Don't automatically assume that the amount you paid earlier this year is still the right amount.

1. Payroll filings are due Friday, July 31

Status: Confirmed deadline

Employers must file federal Form 941 for the second quarter of 2026 by July 31. Businesses may also need to deposit second-quarter FUTA tax when the accumulated liability exceeds $500. California employers face the same July 31 deadline for applicable second-quarter EDD wage reports and quarterly payroll-tax deposits, including Forms DE 9 and DE 9C.

Clients should reconcile payroll registers, payroll-tax deposits, employee wages and withholding before filing. Payroll discrepancies should be corrected promptly rather than carried into the third quarter.
