The "doing great" bit in particular is a major blow to Republicans who were hoping to use Zohran as a "communist" bogeyman heading into the midterms. Instead, they're being forced to watch as their party's leader lavishes praise on the democratic socialist star.

Trump's seeming infatuation with Mamdani obviously isn't rooted in any idealogical common ground, as the mayor has not hesitated to call him a fascist and denounce his attacks on the free press. Rather, Trump likes that Zohran is handsome, charismatic, and a winner. He wants the mayor's aura of success to rub off on him by sheer virtue of proximity.

Some commentators have criticized Zohran for meeting with Trump at all, but it's worth remembering that his responsibility is to his constituents in New York first and foremost. He can both stand up to Trump, and cooperate with him on things that matter to New Yorkers — like with a major housing development plan that Trump is now flirting with supporting. At every turn, Zohran outplays this clown.
