@johnnycakes91 Yeah neat eh! There are actually ties to several original Sens for our immediate area. Benedict, Connell, Bruce, broadbent, etc. Ive had it in mind for years to do something spefically on this topic! (It would be research heavy… But well worth it)
Want to search your house/relative on the 1931 Census? I've created a Kitchissippi Index! Check out https://t.co/3cmjAeGQ9H and you'll find a link to a doc showing every Kitchissippi street on every page of the Census + some other helpful tips/tools. Good luck!
Today is the big day! The 1931 Canadian Census has been released by LAC! It is NOT easy to search (only raw files, no keyword search yet). I'm drafting a tool that will help you find your Kitchissippi house or relative - to be posted at the Museum soon! https://t.co/pELwV4uh8Z
Goodbye 26-32 Armstrong Street. Slated for demolition in the near future, the Museum looks back at the history of this unique, character-filled Hintonburg building - likely most recognizable for its tall stacked stone foundation walls! https://t.co/MT5off7Hw6
@ForrestPass @ottawacity wow that's awesome! Great find! I'm always scanning listings and estate sales and such for fun vintage Ottawa things. Hopefully the City does something cool with it!
Exciting new acquisitions for the Museum this weekend! I was able to (after a lot of physical effort) pull out two cool items from a vintage 1959 OTC bus (the year Ottawa acquired a new fleet when it transitioned from streetcars to buses)!
This is the original destination roll (the full complete unit, complete with the hand crank the driver would use to change the destination), and the route # roll/crank (one part missing sadly) in surprisingly well-preserved condition!
It's on!!! Happy to announce my 2023 Jane's Walk - Sunday May 7th at 11 a.m. at Tunney's Pasture! It will be fun covering the craziness of it's history, proposed uses over time, the birth of the govt campus & future redevelopment plans! See you there! https://t.co/Nwz8fmKkom
New at the Museum! An epic (and long!) story detailing the incredible 1934 story of 2 teen John Dillinger-copycats and a shootout car chase through the streets of Hintonburg and Champlain Park! Grab a coffee on this snowy morning and enjoy the read! https://t.co/t0cgPutfm9
Happy new years! New today at the Museum: The history (in photos) of the 1920s Champlain Bridge construction! 50+ photos of the bridge as it was built, with lot of details on how both the Bridge and Island Park Drive came about and were constructed! https://t.co/l33mckGwXI
Get in the local Christmas spirit of years past, and read an old article I wrote, but a favourite - detailing what Christmas of 1880 in Hintonburg would have been like. I love this one, and hope you will too :) https://t.co/y3SQiV0Fjl
The city is years - no decades - behind in proper heritage review. This Bill would essentially lock in what we have designated now, and permanently exempt all buildings on the heritage register (not yet designated houses of potential interest that the city hasn't gotten to yet)
Bill 23 includes terms that would basically in the next 2 years exempt every non-designated house from being able to be considered for heritage designation! This is horrible! https://t.co/rYAdoYTScR
And what's worse is that this piece is buried inside so many other contentious and worrisome proposals that this isn't even a blip on the radar in local media, even though it desperately needs to be!!!
Stop by and visit the "pop-up museum" tomorrow at Taste of Wellington West! The Kitchissippi Museum will have a little set up at the corner of Wellington and Gilchrist from about 11-2! Lots of photos, maps and other local history things! #TasteofWelliWest#TasteofWellingtonWest
@AndreaMurphy12@sproudfoot I loved that CT! So many memories of going with my Dad and grandfather as a kid, and where I first took my car when I was in my late teens/early 20s. I also can't believe it's been gone so long that it's become a "who remembers it" kind of thing! :)
New today: The hidden history of 1239-1243 Wellington Street West! Now the oldest structure on Wellington within Wellington Village, this building has a 124 year history as a tenanted duplex for 50+ years, a popular bakery, a colour TV shop and more! https://t.co/WnnrbwH9NZ
@AndreaMurphy12 oh wow, thanks for letting me know. Sad to see really. If my grandpa had lived 10 more years he would have been a "millionaire" with the land value. He would have thought that was so wild!
Saying goodbye to my grandparents house. A bit of personal local history, just posted to the Kitchissippi Museum today. The story of 210 Cowley Avenue in Champlain Park. Have a read at: https://t.co/98IMjLcNIL
