“MURDER AS A FINE ART is a masterpiece–I don’t use that word lightly–a fantastic historical thriller... It brilliantly recreates the London of gaslit streets, fogs, hansom cabs, and Scotland Yard. I was spellbound.”–Douglas Preston

@donwinslow@T_J_Newman@T_J_Newman is not only one of my favorite authors, but her incredible story of perseverance greatly inspired me to begin writing my first novel.
"The Twilight Zone" first premiered on CBS on this day in 1959.
Groundbreaking sci-fi anthology television show from Rod Serling remains one of the most spectacularly creative and influential cinematic endeavors of all-time. From the numerous writers, directors and composers (Special mention: Jerry Goldsmith wrote some truly incredible scores for several episodes), the abundance of talent involved in this series was staggering.
It's a true testament to the vision of Rod Serling that so many of the episodes are even more relevant in today's climate than they were five decades ago.
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was released on this day in 1974. Groundbreaking horror masterpiece from co-writer/co-composer/producer/director Tobe Hooper and screenwriter Kim Henkel.
Highlights: Oscar-worthy production design by Robert A. Burns; extraordinary cinematography by Daniel Pearl; unforgettable performances by Marilyn Burns and
Gunnar Hansen.
"Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was a box office sensation, grossing over $30 million dollars off of a production budget of $80,000. Although the film received a mixed critical reception upon release, it is now widely considered to be a film classic.
Leatherface is a horror icon who has returned over the intervening decades in sequels, remakes, and video games. That character and this film has been so widely imitated that it's easy for audiences today to overlook just how revolutionary the original film truly was. From the black humor to the legendary set pieces, it's extraordinarily directed by Tobe Hooper.
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is a masterpiece.
"Cool Runnings" was released on this day in 1993. Inspirational sports comedy from director Jon Turteltaub and screenwriters Lynn Siefert, Tommy Swerdlow and Michael Goldberg.
Highlights: Extraordinary performance by John Candy (worthy of an Oscar nomination); terrific editing by Bruce Green; excellent Hans Zimmer score.
"Cool Runnings" took home box office gold, grossing nearly 10 times its production budget worldwide. It was also a substantial success on VHS.
The movie was underrated then, and it is underrated now. One of the best sports films of the 90s, its message of sportsmanship and the power of second chances is more timely today than ever.
Among my ten favorite films of 1993
I wrote CREEPERS in real time—every instant of 8 hours is dramatized. There aren’t any cuts or leaps forward, as in “Five minutes later, he reached the second floor.” Those 5 minutes are dramatized. Few novels have used this technique so completely.
