Submitted <2 months ago; yesterday published online in Chaos, Solitons and Fractals: on evolutionary spatial cyclic games with ablated dominance networks. Thanks to the Editor & all at @ElsevierPhysics for fast work on this, & to @BristolUniEng too, obvs.

Google are using Hinton's, Hassabis' and Jumper's Nobel Prizes to defend unlicensed AI training on copyrighted work. This is a huge leap of logic.
Neither Nobel Prize awarded for AI work this week was for work that trained on copyrighted creative work without permission. The scientific innovation arising from AI comes from models that are not trained on copyrighted creative work without permission. You get the scientific innovation without exploiting the world's creative work.
Generative AI companies are intentionally eliding AI for scientific discovery with AI for creating media, in the hope that desire for the first will lead to rewriting copyright law for the second.

@ThomasMiconi If the world was a fairer and saner place, Jürgen Schmidhuber would have been a co-recipient. And maybe there would not have been three names. @SchmidhuberAI
BREAKING: This year's #NobelPrize in Physics has been awarded to John J Hopfield and Geoffrey E Hinton for "foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks"
Stay tuned for more from @nature
Do you ever have that thing where you read a paper & think "oh, i'll try to replicate that, it'll only take a couple of days, max", & then it's the only thing you work on for 6 months solid, & then you have an 87-page manuscript with 49 diagrams. That: https://t.co/73KYwbdbuL
I've worked in AI research for 35yrs. This article (which comes from a long-established Israeli magazine and seems very well researched/sourced) is the grimmest telling of the (mis)use of obviously risky yet deployed AI systems that I've ever read.

Woman submits legal appeal against UK tax authority, but seems her appeal was based on LLM/ChatGPT's hallucinatory "understanding" of UK case law (i.e., the AI made up a bunch of precedent cases as basis of appeal, coz they sounded good). Appeal denied.

It's funny how the "existential risk" narcissists seem unable to anticipate grid collapse, or a major solar event ⤵️. Both are now much more likely, and damaging, than their Terminator AI

Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay (WMHD). And so here is my annual WMHD tweet about how, 10 years ago to the week, I had a stress-related breakdown, but got help & got better; been OK ever since. Not everyone is as lucky as me. Video & blog entry here:

@MarketPowerYT Our students very +ve about 1-hr walkthru session recreating some of V. Smith's 1962 JPE expts but on exchange with limit order book, market populated by algo traders, all in a Jupyter notebook, runs on students' laptops. Open-source .py & .pynb here:

@MarketPowerYT I do a session based on V. Smith's first set of exp.econ. results (JPE 70(2):111-137, 1962). Class of 70-80 students: everyone gets a role (buy/sell); rewards are candy. Can run 5 or 6 expts each of 3 min in one class. Happy to share more details by DM.
