Rick James created "Super Freak" by improvising the lyrics on top of a funk riff and called on the Temptations to record the backing vocals. The song became one of his biggest hits and was sampled by MC Hammer on "U Can't Touch This".
"Beds Are Burning" is a powerful protest anthem about returning land to Australiaโs Indigenous peoples, especially the Pintupi. In 1986 Midnight Oil traveled through the Outback playing in remote Aboriginal communities and was deeply affected by the terrible living conditions and forced displacement they saw. In 2000, during the Sydney Olympics closing ceremony, Midnight Oil walked on stage wearing black suits with the word โSORRYโ printed across them (without IOC permission) as a direct protest against the government that refused to apologize to the โStolen Generationsโ. Peter Garrett has always used the band as a strong political platform.
"Steppin' Out" was inspired by the excitement of New York nightlife, where Joe Jackson lived after the divorce.
It became his biggest hit in the US (#6 on the Billboard Hot 100)

When the Sign Oโ The Times Deluxe set was came out I was blown away by how โI Could Never Take The Place of Your Manโ dated way back in 1979. Still one of my favorite vault tracks.
