??? from many... Shouldn't nitrogen deficiency be worse over top the tile lines where nitrate leaves thru tile drainage vs in between the tile lines??

While there is nitrogen loss thru tile drainage and leaching.... denitrification (conversion of nitrate to nitrogen gas) occurs at a much faster rate when soils are saturated and no oxygen present.

Chart shows when soils are warm nitrate loss can be huge with just a few days of soil saturation due to denitrification!

Pictures compare ears/leaves from over top tile lines vs in between where N losses were very high due to denitrification.

This is one of the reasons why drainage is the 1st building block of the yield pyramid! Roots & soil biology need oxygen!!

N stabilizers and split applications help reduce losses thru tile and also denitrification.

Beans were lodged and yield approched zero in the best ground, low black sand, but next to every sprayer track the beans were standing and healthy. That led me to drastically drop populations from the 200k recommended at the time.
