Educational researcher & author of Why America's Public Schools Are the Best Place for Kids & new book, Young Adolescents & The Middle Schools They Needs (2023)
@palan57 If educators can't re-think their heteronormativity, they'll never be able to create equitable spaces for students who are LGBTQIA+. Equity = Each student gets what they need. In loco parentis-"In the place of a parent" as state laws dictate, we educators protect all students.
I was so disappointed by Bill Maher & his guests as I listened to their inability to discern between "equity" and "equality." How embarrassing: a rationale for modeling & teaching every child what equity is! Is Bill becoming Archie Bunker now; too old to connect w/ a new reality?
@DrMattGutierrez Hmmmm . . . "indoctrination" eh? Isn't that like teaching that White men were protecting "their" land when they ignored every treaty with Indigenous tribes? Is that what the guv'na' means by "no indoctrination"? Whose history should we teach so as to prevent "indoctrination"?
@BilgeCagatay @PENamerica Cage, what happens for two Lesbian or Gay men parents--what should they tell their own children--that they're "heterodox"- they're not. A "safe harbor" for LGBTQ+ students IS a book about themselves--not heteronormativity fear mongering. Let's accept all humans.
@palan57 Teachers do their jobs daily without NAEP data. They're the experts on learning and their students' growth--they don't care or pay any attention to NAEP test scores--wisely. Please defund NAEP and use the money to hire more CERTIFIED teachers--that matters!
@palan57 Millions of dollars spent on feckless tests given to children to justify . . . testing them! No teacher needs these data to know what each student can and can't do. Stop spending our taxes on these instruments of pain. My generation never needed tests to insure success: Why now?
Following a semester as an undergraduate teaching kindergarten, I realized that EVERY human needs love, care, and our assistance to become their future selves. I think every potential police officer should spend a few months with kdg students also before they become an officer.
Three years ago (2018) several economists announced that for wages to keep pace with the cost of living, the minimum wage should be at $23 an hour. Why wasn't that reported by major news networks? Now we're bragging about $15 an hour in three years?
I enjoyed your "lesson" for us this evening, Mr. Kay, on your book topics. As professor emeritus from WCU, it's so encouraging to learn from you and spread your message.
@MattRKay Mr. Kay, I just started reading your book & realized that you're a WCU grad. I'm a WCU professor emeritus and currently working on a new edition of our middle school book. Your book = invaluable resource. Would enjoy an email from you: [email protected]
Which "socialism" do you prefer: building a wall, hiring more ICE officers, paying Trump to house the secret service at his golf resorts weekly?
Or, cheaper health care than you now have, cheaper college costs for your kids, better salaries-things that make you say "Hmmmm."
Trump approves another $16 BILLION for farmers today + $12 BILLION last Fall, and wants to spend $billions on a wall. Who's a SOCIALIST, now? SOCIALISM = "Social systems based on shared or government ownership & administration of the means of production & distribution of goods."
Hmm . . . Trump suggests "no socialism," eh? Why is it acceptable to spend billions of dollars yearly on the U. S. SOCIALIST MILITARY (paid for by the people = SOCIALISM); but unacceptable to have a socialist health care so that all U. S. citizens have the "right" to be healthy?
After one year as education secretary, it's safe to say #BestyFailed. Send Betsy DeVos a message: let her know how she has failed to make the grade. https://t.co/BqFakMtx96
