Dawn Astle Awarded MBE in HM King’s New Year Honours

We are delighted to share that our Co-Founder and Chair, Miss Dawn Astle, has been recognised in His Majesty The King’s New Year Honours List for 2025. She has been awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her remarkable dedication to supporting footballers affected by dementia. This prestigious honour not only recognises her heartfelt commitment and passion but also pays tribute to her late father, Jeff Astle. We couldn't be prouder of her achievements and are truly grateful for the positive difference she is making in this vital work.

Dawn Astle MBE, on receiving the honour, said:

“Being recognised with a Royal Award from His Majesty The King is an incredible honour. I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude, humility, and pride, but I also reflect on the fact that this recognition comes after the tragic loss of my lovely Dad. I am deeply thankful for the support of my amazing family, our Trustees, my colleagues, all those who have shown us incredible support throughout the years, West Bromwich Albion Football Club, and of course the amazing West Bromwich Albion fans—my football family.

“This moment marks the culmination of a journey defined by persistence, courage, and an unwavering desire to make a difference to others. It acknowledges past achievements and serves as a foundation for future ones.

“When facing life’s challenges, dare to dream big and have the courage to pursue those dreams, even when they seem impossible at first.”

Dawn Astle is the daughter of Jeff Astle, a legendary centre-forward for West Bromwich Albion and the England national team. Jeff had an 18-year career, remembered for his winning goal in the 1968 FA Cup Final and his participation in the 1970 World Cup. He tragically passed away at 59 and was the first British professional footballer to be diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), highlighting neurodegenerative disease in football.

In response, Dawn and her family launched the Justice for Jeff campaign, rallying 28,000 West Brom fans. They founded The Jeff Astle Foundation in 2015 to raise awareness about brain injuries and support individuals affected by traumatic brain injuries. Dawn's advocacy has led to significant research projects funded by the Football Association (FA) and the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) into player brain health, including the FIELD study, which found that professional footballers are 3.5 times more likely to face neurodegenerative diseases.

Since January 2021, Dawn has been instrumental in establishing the PFA's Brain Health Department, which, in partnership with the Premier League, launched the Football Brain Health Fund in September 2023 to support families with care costs and essential services. The PFA Brain Health Team now delivers brain health education to EFL and WSL professional players. Dawn continues to champion the cause for HM Government to officially recognise dementia and similar conditions in football as industrial diseases. Her tireless commitment inspires hope and fosters positive change for a safer, brighter future for all athletes.
