THE SAINT WHO CHANGED THE CHURCH WITHOUT EVER BECOMING A PRIEST

St. Francis of Assisi was born into wealth, loved luxury, and dreamed of becoming a knight.

Then Christ spoke to him from the crucifix in the ruined church of San Damiano:

“Francis, go and repair My house.”

At first, he thought Jesus meant repairing a building. He sold cloth from his father’s business to buy stones for the church. Later, he realized Christ was calling him to something much greater: renewing the spiritual life of the Church.

Francis embraced radical poverty, not because material things were evil, but because he wanted nothing to stand between his soul and Christ.

His life reflected the Gospel with astonishing simplicity:

• He kissed lepers whom others avoided.
• He spent hours before the Blessed Sacrament.
• He preached repentance with joy rather than anger.
• He loved every creature because all creation reflected its Creator.

The Franciscan movement he founded transformed medieval Christianity, inspiring countless conversions and works of charity.

His greatest miracle was not the stigmata he received on Mount La Verna.

It was becoming so conformed to Christ that people could see Jesus in him.

Holiness does not begin when your circumstances change.

It begins when you allow Christ to change your heart.
