We've been at the forefront of the movement toward healthy school start times since 2011. More than a decade later, Start School Later has surpassed 150 volunteer-led chapters in the U.S., Brazil, and Japan! How can we help you #StartSchoolLater in *your* community? #ItCanBeDone
"Research conducted over the past thirty years has demonstrated that starting school later has many benefits for teens, so the question remains: Why have so few school systems heeded these findings for the sake of their students?"
❓Does sleep matter for mental health? Yes, yes it does.
❓Do later school start times enable teens to get more sleep? Yes, yes they do. #StartSchoolLater#MentalHealthMonth
.@DannyBurgessFL: "The science is irrefutable. So, how do we balance out these competing interests, making sure that we are doing the right thing for kids against obviously the logistical challenges that arise by doing this." #ItCanBeDone https://t.co/fT0MR7lQLN
A bill that would push back school start times for middle and high school students won the backing of the Senate Education PreK Committee on Monday. Middle schools could start no earlier than 8 a.m. under the bill, and high schools no earlier than 8:30 a.m.
“Moving schools to earlier start times runs the risk of creating competition amongst staff to work at schools that start later,” Johnson said. “Many staff may seek jobs in other districts with later start times.”
Some have worried delaying school start times could delay bedtimes, thus perpetuating a vicious cycle of inadequate sleep. However, at 9 months, researchers found participants were spending roughly same amount of time in bed as at the 1 month follow-up. https://t.co/IXzowe9rrL
Middle & high schoolers' lack of time & hunger in morning may be related to early school start times & adolescent circadian rhythm changes. Just as sleep naturally shifts later, many teens are required to be at school earlier. #schoolnutrition

Just because kids have long gone to school too early doesn't mean it's ok. We know better now! Teen biology naturally slides ~2hrs later at puberty, & post-6am #SleepMatters. Legislators in 9 states are considering bills to look at later school start times! #SleepAwarenessWeek
On the latest episode, Matt is joined by #pediatric sleep expert @drcanapari in the first part of a series on how sleep differs between #infants, kids, adolescents and adults. Check it out here! https://t.co/02njCXhrDv
Because of the later biological pacing of the teenage brain, waking at 7am already feels to young people like waking at 5am. W/permanent #daylightsavingtime, it would feel like 4am. This would put a serious strain on teen mental health. #savestandardtime https://t.co/Iq1tcYpxMg
If #DaylightSaving Time becomes permanent, “we have to wake these kids up three hours before sunrise to go to school. That’s not healthy for them and then we’ll have these groggy children staggering to bus stops in jet-black darkness." https://t.co/ExKhTa9MU5
