Who helped shaped our waterways?
⚙️ John Rennie
Rennie was known for his work on bridges, docks and canal construction. His projects include the Lancaster Canal and Rochdale Canal, with his later work on the #KennetAndAvon, including the famous Caen Hill Locks in #Devizes.
@CanalRiverTrust@HillmortonLocks Award winning Conservator Volunteers on the Kennet & Avon have refurbished paddle gearing on 30 locks. Refurbished boaters information boards and rebuilt a sluice that will put 1m litres of water a day back into the canal.

@CRTWalesandSW "Ashing the gates" is a traditional method which was used in the canal's industrial heyday. The technique involves pouring the ash into the canal just above a lock. The flow of water then sucks the ash into the small gaps in the gates allowing them to form a watertight seal.
