I was coming through Clonmel around 11pm last night. A fella was thumbing at the last roundabout.
He was in a tracksuit and unsteady on his feet.
I usually try pick lads up, as I used to have to thumb myself and know what it's like to be stuck
But it was late...
18 March 1944 | At 11 am at the Auschwitz camp Registry Office, which usually prepared prisoners' death certificates, an Austrian mechanic Rudolf Friemel (camp no. 25173) married Margarita Ferrer who came to the camp for one day and night from Germany where she was a force laborer. She brought her son Edi with her. It was the only case of a prisoner getting permission to get married in this German Nazi concentration and extermination camp.
The couple met in Spain where Friemel fought in international brigades against the forces of General Franco. After the Republicans lost the Civil War, the couple escaped to France. They met again in an internment camp. They were parted again and got through many camps and prisons. Margarita was pregnant.
Margarita was finally sent to forced labor in Germany. Friemel was arrested in Auschwitz where he became active in the resistance movement. As an Austrian and a car mechanic working for the SS he successfully managed to get permission to legalize his relationship with Margarita and married her in the camp. He unsuccessfully tried to escape from Auschwitz. He was caught and hanged on December 30, 1944, together with four other escapees. Margarita and the child survived the war.
The picture was taken by a prisoner Wilhelm Brasse in Auschwitz camp photo studio.
