In the early 2000’s when most large leasing companies wouldn’t give @Nomadic_OMD the time of day…I had a reputation for moving airplanes out of anywhere and in almost any condition.
In those early years I spent a lot of time in Nigeria and Congo DRC delivering and repo-ing planes for smaller leasing companies.
As you all know by now, we bounce around from type to type a lot, but after a few straight days of flying patterns, approaches, maneuvers in a 1986 IA-1124A, jumping right into an Airbus is wild. Bob and I each looked at each other on the climb in the A320 and said: “Jesus, this isn’t even piloting!”
It’s really not. The contrast between the two experiences in the space of an hour is truly something else. Being completely honest here, piloting an Airbus is not truly piloting. It’s so unbelievably easy and stress-free, which is a great thing in some respects, is also frightening when you think about the fact that ANY modern airliner can require the same sort of flying skills when the 💩 hits the fan!
I realize an 80’s era jet isn’t exactly accessible to most bus drivers, but I strongly encourage you all to get checked out on a GA aircraft locally and try to make time to buzz around town a few times a year with a 6-pack and no moving maps. I promise - it’s not only good for you, but it’s fun as hell and will remind you why you got into this in the first place!
Long-live the steam gauges!
