When one of the most powerful people in government publicly labels a relatively unknown British citizen an “outright racist”, that deserves scrutiny.

Danny Tommo is not a senior politician or public official. Most people in Britain would not recognise him walking down the street.

Yet the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood has chosen to personally name and condemn him over his involvement in peaceful protests against illegal migration.

People should be free to strongly disagree with Danny Tommo, but ministers should be extremely careful about publicly attacking individual citizens for their political views.

Labour are clearly unwilling to tolerate viewpoints that fall outside their own political worldview.

This is a dangerous path to head down.
