@llggeorgia@TheCriticMag Arguably different messages and emphases suit different times. Police culture and training has swung from hostility to over-indulgence of ethnic minorities. Re David Tennant sometimes you can use your adversary’s weapons against them.
@CitySamuel Reminds me that back in the day Sir Anthony Meyer was famously referred to as a stalking donkey. Feels more like a pantomime horse this time round though
@JamesHu27192912 Reminds me I have a pair of kitchen scissors that don’t work properly because one of the blades is on the wrong (ie outfacing) side. Took me a while to notice and work out the problem
@ladygreenkirtle In Edinburgh there isn’t a number shortage but there are gaps that relate to routes and service numbers withdrawn sometimes a decade or more ago. I like to think of the gaps as representing a prolonged mourning period for the deceased service.
@ladygreenkirtle Yes, I might be among them, they’re heavier than pure butter croissants. Still requires a degree of precision so can understand reluctance in a busy cafe. And not all cakes have an obvious plane of symmetry. Might need to be 25p. Some bakers sell half a large loaf which is useful
@juliet_turner6 Lovely cat. Is it Persian? I used to have an intelligent Persian cat that looked like that. It had a calm temperament and was at ease with its world
@unfortunatalie Thoughtful piece, thanks. What is poetic at one level is good marketing at another that’ll help win popular assent and willingness to fund. The naming of craters (two on this mission, in particular Carroll after astronaut’s late wife) also helps ‘domesticate the extraterrestrial’
@John_Stepek@MerrynSW Originally proposed by George Orwell in a wartime essay ‘in the interest of social cohesion’ (AI) and if I remember correctly there were wage increase policies modelled on it in the 70s. It’s a good debating topic and most parliamentary time is wasted anyway.
@ArmandDAngour@hedgethomist I took Higher Greek in Scotland in 1969. Accents were simply not included in the syllabus. The view at the time seemed to be they were not authentically part of the language. To this day I do not understand how far that is true as I sadly didn’t persevere with studies in classics
@ladygreenkirtle@ruby_dunn01 In promotions/advertisements the time shown on a watch is nearly always ten past ten as it’s much more cheerful and positive than eg the droopy twenty past eight.
@ladygreenkirtle I’ve seen same hairdresser every six weeks for 20 years, more often than I see many friends. Conversation (via a mirror!) is always quite pleasant and unforced but I lose track of time. I thought I remembered she’d installed a new kitchen recently but was 15 years ago.
@holysmoke@MannGeorgia These Reithian strictures are uncalled for. Georgia imparts a fair amount of interesting musical information and observation with a gently humorous touch. It’s a good programme.
