The first American Pope, Pope Leo XIV, is Robert Prevost from Chicago, and he gets emotional on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.

He is 69 years old and is viewed as a centrist, but is progressive on some key social issues.

Like Pope Francis who championed migrants and the poor, Prevost has long embraced marginalized groups.

The death toll has risen to 12 in Bourbon Street, New Orleans, as a white SUV/pick up truck ploughed into New Years revellers.

This is thought to be an image of the vehicle used. It has Texas plates.

The suspect may have got out & opened fire with a rifle.

JUST IN: 23-year-old Kamel Hawkins charged with attempted murder after pushing a random man in front of a moving train in Manhattan.

The incident happened at the 18th Street station this afternoon.

Police say the 45-year-old victim is expected to survive and only suffered a head injury.

Confirmed terrorist attack in New Orleans. 🚨🚨
Local police said the Driver intentionally went around their barricades and drove into a crowd of people injuring 30 and killing at least 10 so far.
After crash the vehicle the suspect got into a shootout with police where 2 officers were shot and the suspect was killed.
Improvised explosive devices were found on the scene.
FBI is taking over the investigation. The FBI spokeswoman at the scene said this is not a terrorist attack.
They declined to comment further stating there will be a press conference with more information at 11:00.
