For decades, too many of our public school districts "graduate" students who come nowhere close to being able to read or do math at a twelfth-grade level. Many don't function at a high school level at all.

Decades of RI governors have treated this problem as if it were radioactive. We cannot break the cycle of poverty unless we fix this problem.

A third of our state is on Medicaid. We spend a fortune trying to deal with the aftermath of poorly educating children who can't afford yet another disadvantage.

The fix is complex, and involves doing different things in different districts. I will improve our poorly performing schools. We have a moral imperative to do so.
