Warren Buffett's idea - to withhold Congress' pay until the Federal budget is balanced - is clever, but not realistic. The budget is too far gone to be balanced in a salary year. It will, unfortunately, take many years.

The Talmud is not like the Bible. Very few Jews follow it, and it’s not meant to be followed in its entirety. The Talmud is a collection of conversations between rabbis in the 3rd - 6th centuries. Some of the content of the conversations is pretty wild, like the Jesus boiling in excrement part, but those parts are not treated as dogma. Only ultra-Orthodox Jews treat the Talmud as literal and to be followed word-for-word.

For example, the part we’re discussing: first of all, most Jewish scholars don’t even think that part is referring to Jesus, because that same person is described elsewhere in the Talmud as having lived about 100 years before Jesus lived. Second, “boiling excrement” is a figurative - not literal - term used throughout the Talmud to describe punishment for sinners. It’s not referring to hell, because Jews don’t even believe in hell to begin with. And last, these conversations are not meant to be followed literally. Later summaries and analyses have been written to summarize and make dogmatic conclusions about the Talmud, and those conclusions are pretty normal, and very closely aligned with Christian values.

That’s correct, and I completely agree. Scripture is very clear that we are chosen by God.

It is also clear that we choose God, and that all people must make that choice.

Hardline five-point Calvinists do not believe that all people can make that choice. They believe you are either elect or not elect, and of course they believe they are elect. This is the kind of Calvinism that I reject.
