@billjamesonline I think the best of both authors has them hitting the traditional forms of storytelling and realizing, "This isn't sufficient for the story I want to tell," and then trying to figure a new way forward. Faulkner came out of that rabbit hole w/Snopes trilogy. Joyce didn't.
@billjamesonline I'm still baffled Trea Turner hasn't gotten more love in this conversation. Ticks all the boxes: winning team, great hitter, great baserunner, plays a couple important positions well, and doesn't have any baggage I'm aware of.
@billjamesonline Poker. Being good at poker requires two distinct skills: a logic capacity to interpret odds/betting patterns, and an emotional IQ component to both read other players and communicate where you're at to aid your purposes. I really enjoy working in those two spaces simultaneously.
@billjamesonline His teams always won. With the exception of the '76 Cards (where he played the first third of the season before going to LA) and the '79 Dodgers (where he missed half the year), none of his teams ever had a losing record.
@billjamesonline Considering the aggressive decline in animal species globally, I'm okay with trying anything that might mitigate biodiversity loss on the planet.
@billjamesonline I had a writing teacher - a warm and brilliant man - who had a sign over his office door that read, "Abandon 'hopefully' all ye who enter here."
@ItsMikeHill You should examine your opinion about Cobb. His grandfather was an anti-slavery preacher, his father advocated for the education of blacks in GA, and Ty was a public supporter of Jackie's integration. Not a saint, but his views on race are more complex than credited.
@robneyer Having spent more time than I would have thought in this lifetime talking to folks who research and conduct prescribed burns, I've learned that naturally occurring wildfires are ecologically useful, and putting them out delays the problem.
@billjamesonline What's interesting is that I tend to think of the Tigers as a team that typically has good hitters, like the Yankees. Do other people think of some teams as 'hitting' teams or 'pitching teams' (Dodgers)?
@billjamesonline Almost identical WAR tallies. This is where Win Shares really breaks from WAR, with Sosa at 321 career WS, Buehrle at 220. I agree with Win Shares: Sosa was closer to the standards of the Hall.
