ICE killed a father of three yesterday and no one is talking about it. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo spent 35 years in Houston building homes and raising a family. According to people interviewed, every night after work you'd find him on his porch, listening to music, petting his dog. He helped his three kids (U.S. Citizens) get through college. It certainly seems that he was doing everything right, and then a federal agent shot him dead during a stop and his own son found out from a Facebook video, recognizing his father's voice as he lay bleeding in the street. His son says that if his father had recognized any sign of law enforcement, he would have complied without question. DHS says he "tried to run him over." This is the exact same lie they used to justify murdering Renee Good, a mother of three. We are being asked to trust a rogue, lawless agency's word over a dead man's family, again, with no body cam release and no independent investigation. Everyone should be outraged.

Mientras el país celebra, una noticia pasó prácticamente inadvertida. El 30 de junio fueron cesadas las 43 personas trabajadoras sociales del Instituto Federal de Defensoría Pública. No eran personal administrativo. Eran profesionales que realizaban investigaciones socioeconómicas, elaboraban dictámenes en trabajo social e identificaban las condiciones de vulnerabilidad de quienes acuden al Estado porque no pueden pagar una defensa o una asesoría jurídica. Su trabajo permitía que mujeres víctimas de violencia, niñas, niños y adolescentes, personas mayores, indígenas, migrantes, personas con discapacidad y víctimas de violaciones a derechos humanos recibieran una atención integral y una defensa acorde con su realidad. Cuando desaparece este personal especializado, no sólo se pierden empleos; también se debilita la posibilidad de impartir una justicia profesional, independiente y de calidad para quienes más la necesitan. Resulta especialmente preocupante que, después de que la reforma judicial prometió reiteradamente respetar los derechos laborales, continúen presentándose ceses que dejan a personas servidoras públicas sin empleo y, en algunos casos, incluso sin seguridad social para continuar tratamientos médicos indispensables. Defender los derechos laborales también es defender el Estado de derecho. Y proteger a quienes hacen posible el acceso a la justicia es proteger, sobre todo, a quienes menos tienen. La justicia también se debilita cuando se despide a quienes la hacen posible.
