This is a helpful description of what it means for biblical counselors to redeem psychology. We are not merely informed by psychology but we seek to redeem it. This is core to what I mean when I use the term “clinically-informed.”

I’ve been thinking more about biblical counseling philosophy and practice and the various ways to describe it, what drives it, and what determines its boundaries. Here is a my personal proposal:

- Covenantal
- Confessional
- Communal
- Commissional

Covenantal refers to the way our Triune God purposes to relate to His people from eternity to eternity. It shapes how we understand redemption, law, sin, suffering, grace, and the gospel with greater clarity.

Confessional refers to the historic confessions of the church that guard and guide theology and practice. This also considers the history of soul care through the ages.

Communal refers to the relational nature of God and His people. At the center of the gospel is eternal and intimate relationship and our union with Christ. This also gives shape to ecclesiology - the importance and place of the body of Christ - the Church.

Commissional refers to the work of God in restoring all things for His glory and His commission to us to participate with Him in making disciples of all nations. All our theology and care of souls is done towards this end.

From these we develop the particulars of our 1) theology 2) anthropology/psychology 3) ecclesiology 4) missiology.

This shapes our methology and practice.
