@JamesMo28717330@19_forty_five I've read that there are some sobering obstacles to refitting and redeploying any of those Iowa class museum pieces now.
AUDACITY: THE LAST STAND OF TAFFY 3
(The Battle off Samar – October 25, 1944)
How this hasn’t been made into a movie yet, I’ll never know.
On this day in 1944, during the largest naval battle in history, over 300 valor awards were earned by a single, outnumbered task group—Taffy 3.
Six escort carriers. Three destroyers. Four destroyer escorts. Mostly reservists.
Their mission was to protect MacArthur’s landings in the Philippines. They never expected to meet the main Japanese fleet—four battleships, six heavy cruisers, and the 70,000-ton Yamato, the largest battleship ever built.
But the Americans did not retreat. They attacked.
Commander Ernest E. Evans, of the USS Johnston, led a suicidal torpedo run that crippled a Japanese cruiser before his own ship went down. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
Lieutenant Commander Robert W. Copeland, aboard the USS Samuel B. Roberts, told his crew:
“This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can.”
The Samuel B. Roberts—the “destroyer escort that fought like a battleship”—charged headlong into cruisers thirty times her size. When she sank, Gunner’s Mate Paul H. Carr, mortally wounded, tried to load one last round with his bare hands.
Above, carrier pilots with ill equipped ordnance for the task, dove again and again—some dropping depth charges, others firing pistols when ammo ran out. Their fury convinced the enemy they faced the entire U.S. fleet. The Japanese admiral turned back.
Three heavy cruisers sunk. Three more crippled. Five American ships lost. 1,583 killed or missing. 913 wounded. But the beaches of Leyte—and tens of thousands of lives—were saved.
Even the Japanese saluted them as they drifted in the sea.
This was not a battle of machines. It was a battle of will.
This is what Audacity means. Not arrogance or madness. But the quiet fury to fight anyway.
Because when Americans are outnumbered, outgunned, and outmatched, that’s when we’re at our most dangerous.
Thanks alot though Halsey. IYKYK.
@AnonUpon@mostlypeaceful I think what he said was we keep our second amendment rights in perpetuity, try to keep loonies from shooting people best we can and accept that a few deaths will be unstoppable. We can do better at lunatic control though.
@JrDosen @XCaseFiles Who randomly "finds" some kind and honest person or family to "keep" a child ( kidnapping and conspiracy) forever and keep it a secret? No one, that's who. Especially not this psychopathic mother. Sad. Dead.
Now this is mind blowing
Joe Rogan “Kids Wish Network:
- They raised $127 million
- They paid to solicitors $109 million
- They spent percentage on direct cash
- Aid to the actual kids is ONLY 2.5%
- Look at the Cancer Fund of America. LESS THAN 1% went to the actual thing”
