Despite days of unspeakable abuse, she never betrayed her comrades. She died defiant, refusing to give her captors the satisfaction of breaking her.

When Joseph Stalin learned what the Germans had done to Comrade Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, he was consumed with rage. He ordered Marshal Zhukov that the men of the 197th Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht, the unit responsible for these atrocities, were not to be taken prisoner under any circumstances.

When Marshal Zhukov asked what the Red Army should do with them, Stalin's reply was immediate and unequivocal:
