@Michael_Jk_ I can't believe how many people don't realize this is taken out of context, the fact that this is a 5 second clip should be an obvious red flag
@fen_lon Maybe this is how we developed language, with theory of mind we can infer what someone is trying to direct our attention to and then if you add a label to that thing we learn the association.
@drmichaellevin Really cool! Is the Platonic space non physical information, and are the potential cognitive aspects of this like self-processing information? This could be similar to the CTMU, though I wonder how such a Platonic space with minds develops, unless you think it's a brute fact?
@muellerberndt@PandemicaMente@RealChrisLangan It'd be great to see him chat with someone who understands the CTMU really well. And if it is the CTMU shouldn't the title of the paper acknowledge that?
@DrJavierDeLaHe1 Yeah fair point. My biggest problem with conditional prayers is that for some people it could reprogram the subconscious mind and work as a self fulfilling prophecy. Saying "God if you exist" everyday is like assuming there is a god (the brain can make that inference eventually)
@Plinz So religions provide a "god model" that a person's self model is in relation to. Though I guess there would still be certain beliefs such as what features a god model has as well as how someone should treat this supernatural agent (these beliefs can be explicit or not)
@ihteshamali Why use AI?
Not sure that all neural mechanisms will simply fade if not used enough. Dreams are arguably more visceral than visual, unclear images and strong feelings often. Vision is also the most dominant sensation in waking life, so other ways to explain why dreams are visual
@DrJohnVervaeke One could think value emerges with conscious agents but isn't in the physical world, so truth is still important. I think part of the issue is assuming the physical world is always most real and the most salient aspect of reality, we don't have to assume it has inherent value
@TOEwithCurt The how question could refer to the hard problem and the evolved function of consciousness, in my opinion. And if people with aphantasia show the same neural pattern/ correlates when imagining tennis as others, then this test doesn't prove consciousness
@Snowforestxdd8 @JaldiTheLaqxhj That's just one reason to be skeptical of a benevolent God as that's often assumed here. Only so much I can type but there are naturalistic explanations (e.g., non religious mystical experiences increase neuroplasticity and suggestibility) and many healing claims aren't credible
@Snowforestxdd8 @JaldiTheLaqxhj I actually think there are some decent arguments for God (I'm agnostic). But Joe talked a lot about divine miracles as evidence, specifically those with a Catholic undertone. We all have biases but thinking God only intervenes to aid (some) Catholics out of all the tragedy/ evil?
@abanoub1780 Yeah I'm surprised too, since he was raised Catholic there may have been some part of him that wanted to learn more about the faith (seeking out these miracle stories) and make sense of it all. Could be a desire to return to one's (religious) roots to feel more whole as well..
@NTFabiano Many times we want to deactivate cognitive control areas to experience flow and immersion, so an interesting follow up is whether watching short videos impairs cognitive control AFTER when people are trying to complete tasks
@TOEwithCurt Some things (like consciousness) are hard to precisely capture with words yet they are very knowable and self-evident which we can at least point to with words
@taylorburrowes There is also wide within person variability of personality which can be hard to measure, so someone who is disagreeable on average can be quite agreeable in a romantic relationship for example. Also, neuroticism may be the biggest conflict predictor (not low A or low C)
@Kpaxs Yeah, and it can even help to understand someone else's conclusions/ ideas better by getting more context and seeing their thought patterns in action. It also makes their ideas more memorable and more likely to influence you. That said I think doing both is ideal
@SahilBloom Indecisiveness/ overthinking/ caution could come more from neuroticism, but impulse control is likely related to intelligence. Courage is more virtuous than intelligence, yes, as well as being humble and curious to continually learn (that doesn't come for free with intellect)
