It seems a contradiction to me to say they must be more in tune with the people and then call them “elites”. For the Ancient Greeks, who started all of this, leaders were “ordinary citizens”

@RadioFreeTom @anneapplebaum It’s the oddest thing. Even if he got his wish and Russia became “dominant across Europe” in what universe does he believe that would be a good outcome for America? It’s a real case two ways to curse a man - don’t give him what he wants or give him what he wants.

@TrentTelenko I have no sympathy for the Iranian regime but I do find it utterly tragic that the Americans are now reduced to saying that Iranian children, who had no say whatsoever in where their school was built, will get to “die in them” and to worry about that is to have a “hissy fit”.

@HayekAndKeynes This is an excellent article. I’m from Europe and have got a bit sick of the constant “Europeans are all pathetic and hate America” posts. They aren’t and we don’t! This article, while criticising Europe, is mature, balanced, based in reality, and devoid of hatred. Great read.

@Arrogance_0024 Misses the point that 85% of the people who live in Greenland don’t want to join the US. I’d agree that if the majority of Greenlanders want to join the US they should be allowed to but not under threat. Also, wouldn’t joining Canada be as valid an option as the USA?

@avidseries I see this kind of comment a lot. Everyone knows the USA would win militarily but it completely misses the point that there are other ways for Europe to respond than militarily. All this to placate Trumps ego to be the first president in while to add some land to the map. Tragic.

@andrewmichta @MarkJCarney I read what you posted and while I tend to agree, I still draw the line at threatening violence, which the USA has done to both Canada and Europe (via Greenland). So, while you have a point, I suspect I know which party the world blames more. MAGA also seems here to stay a sadly.

@HansMahncke Sadly true but doesn’t justify invasion. The USA also made historical mistakes - Native Americans, Vietnam, giving Syphilis to Black men. Should America give all Native American land back? I happen to agree with you that Greenland should determine its own future but w/o threats.

@LangmanVince A bit of a silly post really. There are big countries and small countries. The US is a big country, Denmark is a small country. This is nothing new. The question is whether attacking someone a fraction of your size makes you feel good - if it does then you’re just a psychopath.

@jonatanpallesen Perhaps but slightly disturbing that your post doesn’t seem to say “if the people of Greenland want to be sold”. They are not bargaining chips. Last I read 85% of them don’t want to be American. Not checking in with Greenlanders makes it a colonial transaction.

@Kasparov63 So if a federal officer tells you to murder someone you should do it w/o question? Now America is turning its back on Nuremberg and opening up the “I was just following orders” excuse. What about if they order us to admit the Earth is flat? Do we die if we won’t do that as well?

@ClayTravis It’s not the idea of selling. It’s the threat of violence if they don’t sell that’s the issue. Also, don’t pretend the USA didn’t colonise - what about all that land you took from Native Americans, Hawaii etc? Finally, the people of Greenland should have a say - without threats.

@TrentTelenko She is absolutely correct. Not because anyone will actually fight the USA but because all trust in NATO will evaporate instantly and trust is paramount. I suspect Trump actually wants just that. This isn’t Cyprus and Trump isn’t suggesting any such compromise. He wants takeover.

@splendid_pete I think they grasp it very well. They just don’t care. That’s a lot more frightening. If someone doesn’t grasp something you can try and educate them but if they do grasp it fully and they still don’t care you have a serious problem. That’s the space we are in sadly.

@yarotrof Really, that’s interesting. Looking forward to seeing Alaska and Northern California going back to Russia so. Parts of which they controlled for over a 100 years. After all, America would never ask another country to do what they wouldn’t be prepared to do themselves would they?
