@OnlyInBOS Yes! Currently November is a joke (completely uncontested) even though it's when most people vote. Q3 would make politicians have to actually compete for our votes.
@njkingsbury57@OnlyInBOS It helps third parties: a third party has never won in at least 100 years in MA under the current system. With Q3, they'd be allowed to leverage fusion endorsements
Preview from me: All politics is local, but local politics is disappearing. My new research into MA's local elections show 18.7% turnout in 2025, near historic lows. To my knowledge, this is the first collection of all 351/351 local election results for a single year. #mapoli
@JonathanCohn Huh? That doesnโt make any sense: if MA voters overwhelmingly dislike Trump, then giving them a real choice in the high-turnout, diverse, young November election will not help a Trumpy candidate win. It will make it so most registered voters have a choice tho instead of <20%!
@Noumenon72@Jlrube Voter education is key: by not ranking the maximum, you are saying you have no preference between the remaining candidates. Which is often true for voters who only care about one candidate! (Think many Adams voters in 2021.)
@aaronfhamlin 5) AK wrote the law so they wouldn't run tabulations immediately and had to wait 2 weeks, but this isn't a fault of RCV
6) Under approval, if I wanted Palin far more than Begich but approved both, there's a good chance my vote would help B & hurt P
@aaronfhamlin To your points:
1) RCV indeed privileges first choices, which I think is fair.
2) Begich failed to secure as many first choice votes as either
3) I think approval voters would be asked to bullet vote, whereas RCV is very hard to game
4) Fair
@aaronfhamlin Have there been fiercely partisan, big-money real-world approval elections like in Alaska? I don't know of any, and I hypothesize it would results in far more strategic voting.
@aaronfhamlin I read your article and I don't think you factored in Begich->Peltola voters enough- Peltola overall had broader support than Palin. I agree Begich would have been more vaguely palatable to more Alaskans but neither FPTP nor approval would get us to him.
@aaronfhamlin We see voters oblige all the time to what campaigns advise, especially when a voting system is new: "just vote for me" is an easy command to follow. Bullet voting is way too much of a vulnerability for approval and can take us back to FPTP.
@SpaghettiKozak@joerogan@JohnFetterman Yeah Fetterman sounds like such an idiot here; Democrats are so outrageously dumb for not sending Harris or Walz or Buttigieg
