“If there's anyone listening today who is struggling, who feels overwhelmed, isolated, or without hope, please know this: you are not alone.” Prince William in his speech at Hill Dickinson Stadium today, World Suicide Prevention Day. “There are people who care about you, people who want to help. And support is available. Reaching out is not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of strength. Your life matters and help is there.”
The Prince delivered his powerful speech at Everton’s new home to a large audience of mental health campaigners, sports stars such as Dame Kelly Holmes and Dame Laura Kenny, and footballing leaders such as Richard Masters of the Premier League and Mark Bullingham of the FA.
The Prince launched a toolkit “On Your Side”, providing guidance on recognising risk and responding appropriately, and called on the sports sector to play an increased role in suicide prevention. “Sport reaches people in ways few other sectors can,” the Prince continued. “Every week, hundreds of thousands of people walk through the gates of stadiums and arenas, gather in club-houses, sports halls, gyms and community centres. They play together, train together, watch together and support one another, building relationships that can last a lifetime.
“Sport creates connections and those connections really matter. When somebody is struggling, often it’s not a (health) professional who first notices. It's a friend, a coach, a colleague, a team-mate. Someone who sees a change. Someone who asks if ‘everything is all right’. Someone who starts a conversation - and that conversation could make all the difference.”
The Prince and Princess of Wales met Carol Speed, the mother of the former Everton player Gary who took his life in 2011. There are 7,000 suicides in the UK every year - the biggest single killer of men under 50 in the UK. “It's important for us all to remember that we do not always know what someone is going through,” the Prince added. “We do not always see what is happening behind closed doors or understand the battles taking place below the surface.
“Our hope is that every sporting organisation in the country will look at what is being launched today and ask the question: ‘what more can we do?’ Because the opportunity before us is enormous.
“Suicide remains one of the greatest challenges facing our society. You will know families whose lives have been changed forever by loss. We re-commit ourselves to doing everything we can to prevent more families from experiencing the pain.”

@CecilLammey What position are you most concerned about entering the season (note this question is different than “whose ankle are you most concerned about?”).
@TheBuckeyeNut I see this as they’re hiring an adult who can stabilize things for 3 years while hoping to wash the many stains of the past few years off.
@NicholasMendola Mendoza’s momentum led him to Curry, who had no time to let up. It’s a fast physical game and a bang-bang play. Thankfully Mendoza is back and seems okay.
