There have always been two Joe Bidens. The empathetic, decent, big-hearted leader, forged in loss and grief, finding the good in his friends and opponents, in love with America, arms wide and open with space for everyone. And there’s the blowhard with a chip on his shoulder, stubborn, something to prove, his fellow senators rolling their eyes as the finger wags harder and the stories get longer. Statesman and politician, hero and fool.

Joe Biden ran for president for 50 years. He finally won because he ran as that hero at a time when the country was desperate for empathy and normalcy and wisdom and grace. It was still too close. But even when he was doubted by insiders and pundits (hi!), he persevered; he knew Democrats, he knew America, and he was right.

And then! To his great and everlasting credit, Joe Biden governed as that statesman too. He built a coalition wide enough to hold Joe Manchin and Bernie Sanders. He defied Washington’s stodgy consensus when necessary, a consensus he spent a lifetime living inside. He adapted, he governed with humility and purpose, whether on how to revive the economy, or take on monopolies, or address student loans, or press for the largest investment in clean energy by any country anywhere on earth. And even as he showed the capacity to listen to the rising progressive voices inside the Democratic party, at the very same time he achieved bipartisan legislative successes in defiance of every political trend of the last thirty years. Joe Biden has been an extraordinary president! Statesman. Hero.

But it’s hard to deny that in the two weeks since the debate, it’s the arrogant and small Joe Biden we’ve seen most - hanging on, bragging, defensive, angry, weak. Who else but him? he wonders aloud. Only God could change his mind, he tells us. The stakes for the country are all that matter. The stakes for Joe Biden are beside the point. But it’s worth saying just the same: Joe Biden can leave office as one of the greatest presidents in our lifetimes, who defeated Trump and put his country first at every turn; or he can leave a stubborn old man who allowed hubris and insecurity to destroy his legacy and perhaps our democracy with it.

We all have our best and worst selves, scrambling over each other, battling it out in the moments that define us. Where is the Joe Biden we elected? Where is the statesman? I hope that version of him shows up soon. And I hope the people around him know where to look.

Seeing a mutation that confers resistance to flu antivirals is a huge concern actually. If this were to spread, it could render flu drugs in stockpile less effective. There are not many alternatives in abundant supply.

Historical note, a single mutation occured in seasonal flu viruses in 2008; NAI-resistant influenza A(H1N1) strains were widespread during the 2008–09 influenza season, especially in Japan, where 100% of the strains were resistant to oseltamivir. Fortunately, when the 2009 H1N1 pandemic swept through, it carried an NA gene that did not have the resistance mutation, reverting flu viruses during the pandemic susceptible to the drug. A close call.

14/n in my opinion the best way to reduce the likelihood that you will infect your friends, colleagues, family is to keep up with your boosters/annual immunizations. For that reason I would have recommended this past week that everyone receive another XBB not just those over 65

⚠️BEYOND ANGRY—Lots of confusion on CDC’s new isolation guidelines— why? Because The CDC MADE THEM CONFUSING & VAGUE ON PURPOSE. Proponents claim it still has “some isolation” & still “some precautions”. But if you read actual guidelines (which are clear as mud)—see if you think they are vague/confusing…

1) stay home if symptoms “not better explained by another cause” ➡️ummm WHAT THE HELL??? Do people need to both likely ask doctor to exclude all other causes, or SELF-DIAGNOSE and play SELF-EPIDEMIOLOGY to attribute symptom causation to be <50% other cause? How do people even do that? Give me a frigging break.

2) If no fever, “Symptoms getting better overall”—➡️how do you define BETTER and OVERALL? 💡What if sneezing less frequent but runny nose still bad? 💡What if coughing less, less headache, but sneezing more? HOW THE HELL DO PEOPLE WEIGHT THESE DIFFERENT SYMPTOMS?!?! (Also keep in mind 50% of all COVID transmission is asymptomatic…. So this one is disingenuous to begin with). What the heck @CDCgov — you know this is outright dereliction of duty to put out trash guidelines like this!

3) After you go back to school/work/social settings—➡️for next 5 days (which does NOT guarantee you’re not infectious anymore at all to begin with)… “take precautions such as …. [LIST]… and/***or*** [LIST]”… the 🔥key detail I want to highlight is the super vague “or” near the end of that sentence! Why? Well, the explicit meaning therefore is simple “CHOOSE ONE OF THE ABOVE [LIST] OF PRECAUTIONS”. Thus, the @CDCDirector is basically telling you that you can do almost nothing and casually do one like “Simply TEST” and you can be around others—the CDC doesn’t even say “Only if you test negative”—just simply “test”!

This is honestly one of the WORST guidelines the @CDCgov has ever written. It is purposefully vague and allows a myriad of loopholes and subjective interpretations— exactly the kind of stuff corporate executives and politicians love — they can say they are complying with the CDC while doing virtually nothing much at all to protect people and public health!

This on on too of the already horrible shoddy data/analysis that the guideline is supposedly based on (see earlier 🧵), and based on data from likely illegally enacted CA guidelines (see other legal complaint 🧵)…. ➡️This is honestly one of the worst despicable disingenuous corrupt guidelines that the @CDCgov @CDCFlu has ever done and @CDCDirector has ever rubber stamped. The CDC used to be a shining beacon on a hill—it is now inept and/or complicit and has betrayed its mission to disease *control and prevention* that is in its very name.
