KAPINGA CALLS FOR REVIEW OF LAW CREATING ‘OIL OLIGARCHS’

Okavango West Member of Parliament Kenny Kapinga has urged the current UDC-led government to amend a law he says has created oil tycoons and concentrated Botswana’s wealth in the hands of a few.

Speaking during a Special Meeting Session, Kapinga criticised the previous BDP administration for mandating Botswana Oil Limited to import 90% of the country’s fuel, leaving only 10% to citizen owned companies.

He said the policy has failed to benefit ordinary Batswana, instead enriching a small elite with control over the fuel sector.

Responding to the concerns, Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Kewendo said government is currently reviewing Botswana Oil’s mandate and will soon deliberate on its findings and next steps.
