I looked at this fee sheet and the math bothered me.
$8,000 for general maintenance. $2,500 for internet. $5,500 for security. $6,000 for computer labs. That is $22,000 in operational costs billed to one family at one government school before a single textbook is bought.
Jamaica has roughly 800 government primary schools. A school with 500 students collecting $22,000 per student in operational fees alone is pulling in $11 million a year from parents for expenses the Ministry of Education is supposed to cover.
These are not extras. Maintenance, internet and security are basic operational costs. The Ministry has a multi-billion dollar budget. Someone needs to explain why parents are paying for the same line items twice.
