Totally agree with @asemota assessment here on MBA’s for entrepreneurs are not sufficient. That is why we created the Master of Business Creation @EcclesMBC, an intense 12 month accelerator plus graduate degree for serious entrepreneurs.
The MBA was created as an academic solution to accelerate the training of management talent in an era of great need and shortage. The startup accelerator became the equivalent for founders but without the academic rigor and a compressed time frame.
I have an MBA that I did in a two-year blur. I can’t remember anything from it as I started a business at the same time to allow me to afford it.
It is funny that the courses I probably derived the most value from at Hallam and HBS were not MBAs, but shorter and more intense courses that went straight to the point.
I gained exactly what I needed to do what I had to do at the time. I think that is what business education should be about, specifics but with latitude for you to explore the theoretical concepts by yourself.
I have relatives with Ivy League MBAs suddenly looking for jobs because of the uncertain state of the world and also because there is an MBA glut. Bushess school education is no longer enough. Schools are also cutting tuition fees as enrolment is down and people can't afford high fees.
I still think an academic foundation is important. I can think from first principles to solve business problems because of it. I also think the generalist MBA should only be done when you have the need for a broader perspective. This is why it is good for consultants but not so much for business people.
A course like this one below is what I want to start doing for African entrepreneurs. @perfexcellent@yoowai and myself are working on something we will share soon.
@asemota Totally agree with your assessment and point of view. That is why we created this program in 2019 @EcclesMBC. It is offered in Africa in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. @asemota, We should connect and explore a collaboration.
