Meet Gitonga, a matatu driver who, after an exhausting 18-hour shift from 6 a.m. to midnight, went home with just Ksh 70 in his pocket last night. After fueling the vehicle and remitting the owner's daily target, that was all that remained for him and his family.The sharp rise in fuel prices has dealt a severe blow to Kenya’s public transport sector, particularly PSV operators. For context, back in 2014, the fare from Nairobi to Thika was typically Ksh 100–120, when fuel retailed at around Ksh 90–110 per litre. Twelve years later, fares on the same route have barely changed, while fuel prices have more than doubled — now hovering above Ksh 200 per litre. To restore profitability to the PSV business, fares would need to increase significantly, in line with the surge in operating costs.
