1/5 Every summer, parts of J&K turn purple. A decade-long government push has made lavender a symbol of the new Kashmir narrative. But the ‘Purple Revolution’ is running into another question: how do you turn a successful harvest into a business?

2/5 Over a span of 10 years, a crop few farmers had heard of is now grown in Ganderbal, Pulwama, Anantnag and beyond. The ambition is to make lavender as much a part of Kashmir’s identity as apples and saffron.

3/5 Scientists went village to village under the Centre’s Aroma Mission, persuading farmers to try lavender and handing out free saplings. The effort worked. But falling prices for lavender oil, patchy processing facilities and too few buyers have made the business side harder.

4/5 The real profit lies in value-added products such as lavender-based cosmetics and herbal teas, say entrepreneurs like Madeeha Talat and Munazah Jeelani. But gaps in processing and packaging still force them to look outside J&K.

5/5 As Zabeer Ahmed, director of CSIR-IIIM in Jammu, put it: “The cultivation has happened. Now we have to ensure that the business happens too.”

She added, "There can be no step back on the demand for Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation. No change of ministry will be acceptable. No bill against paper leaks is going to satisfy the demand that Dharmendra Pradhan must resign. There must also be accountability for the violence that took place on the 20th. The Commissioner of Police and the Home Minister must also be held accountable. There can be no compromise or adjustment on this issue.”
