Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram messenger, gave an interview to Tucker Carlson: highlights of his statements

In the interview, Pavel Durov put a lot of emphasis on the independence of the messenger. He boasts that the app is currently "a symbol of freedom of speech and there will never be censorship in the app."

▪️ Durov tries not to travel to major geopolitical powers (Russia, China, the US).

▪️ Telegram's office is located in Dubai (UAE) because of the country's political neutrality. Durov tried to open an office in Berlin, London and Singapore, but ran into bureaucracy everywhere.

▪️ Durov had the idea of staying in San Francisco. However, when he was returning home one day, he was attacked in the street by three unknown men and tried to snatch his phone from his hands.

▪️ Durov was pressured by the FBI in the States, and was met at the airport by secret service agents, who came to his home, wanting to "establish relations" in order to have "control over the messenger". The last time Durov came to the US with an engineer, the FBI tried to secretly recruit his employee.

▪️ Durov said his app is often used during protests - in Belarus, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan and Barcelona. But Telegram is available to everyone - it's a neutral platform.

▪️ The biggest pressure on Telegram comes from Apple and Google, not governments. The companies have hinted that if the rules on their censorship are not followed, the messenger could be removed.

▪️ Durov said he has hundreds of millions of dollars in accounts and cryptocurrency, but he doesn't need it, "this lifestyle is not for him." He said he does not own real estate, cars, "airplanes and private islands," because it makes him location-bound, which violates his "vision of independence and freedom." He said his messenger Telegram is "about freedom of speech" and not "about money."

▪️ Pavel Durov said in an interview with Tucker Carlson that Russian authorities in 2013-2014 demanded that he hand over private information about the organizers of the Euromaidan in Ukraine that Vkontakte had. Pavel refused the Russian government telling them that he "would not betray Ukrainian users."
