In October 1998, Terence McKenna sat down with director John Hazard at his home in Hawaii to discuss his philosophy and vision for the future.
Hazard had set out to make a documentary on McKenna's ideas. But six months into filming, McKenna was diagnosed with cancer, and the project was left unfinished. Years later, in 2012, the footage was finally released.
In this remarkable conversation, McKenna describes a world growing increasingly strange.
He suggests that change is accelerating faster than our ability to understand it. The systems designed to keep society stable are no longer equipped to handle the complexity of what is emerging.
For McKenna, this intensifying weirdness is a signal. Humanity is being pushed to its limits, not necessarily toward collapse, but toward transformation.
Within this rupture, he argues that psychedelics may emerge as a kind of bridge between worlds.
As old frameworks dissolve, psychedelics may help orient us within the unknown, making better sense of the chaos and allowing us to participate more consciously in what is unfolding.
