What Happens When You Fall Into a Black Hole?
This simulation tracks a camera plunging into a supermassive black hole with a mass of 4.3 million Suns, similar to the one at the center of our Milky Way.
The orange glow surrounding the black hole is its accretion disk—hot, luminous gas spiraling inward. Closer to the black hole lies a series of photon rings, created by light that has orbited the black hole one or more times before reaching the camera.
As the camera approaches, the effects of extreme gravity and its increasing speed become strikingly clear. Images of the accretion disk and background sky warp, duplicate, and form mirror reflections. Structures directly in the camera’s path grow brighter due to the relativistic effects of motion and intense gravity.
At the 42-second mark, the camera crosses the event horizon—the boundary beyond which nothing, not even light, can escape. The view of the sky contracts and shifts forward as the camera’s speed nears the speed of light.
Once inside the event horizon, the camera would be torn apart by tidal forces 128,000 kilometers from the singularity. It would then plunge toward the black hole’s center in microseconds, where the laws of physics as we know them cease to exist.
**Key Numbers to Consider**:
- The outer edge of the accretion disk spans 156 million kilometers, comparable to the distance between Earth and the Sun.
- The inner edge of the accretion disk lies 38 million kilometers from the black hole, roughly 25% of Earth’s distance to the Sun.
- The photon ring radius is 25 million kilometers.
- The event horizon radius measures 12.5 million kilometers.
- Spaghettification—the extreme stretching due to gravity—occurs 128,000 kilometers from the singularity.
The time counter in the simulation illustrates both the local time experienced by the falling camera and the time perceived by a distant observer. Once the event horizon is crossed, external time appears to stretch infinitely, marking the point of no return.
The Blindsight device from Neuralink will enable even those who have lost both eyes and their optic nerve to see.
Provided the visual cortex is intact, it will even enable those who have been blind from birth to see for the first time.
To set expectations correctly, the vision will be at first be low resolution, like Atari graphics, but eventually it has the potential be better than natural vision and enable you to see in infrared, ultraviolet or even radar wavelengths, like Geordi La Forge.
Much appreciated, @US_FDA!
Who is negotiating for us in the Middle East? Bombs are dropping all over the place! Sleepy Joe is sleeping on a Beach in California, viciously Exiled by the Democrats, and Comrade Kamala is doing a campaign bus tour with Tampon Tim, her really bad V.P. Pick. Let’s not have World War lll, because that’s where we’re heading!
