Text from friend and Bolivia analysts Javier Huarachi Villegas: "Zúñiga expresses a transformation of the Arce wing, a mutation towards authoritarianism, a coup is not ruled out, but it is a warning, a message to Evo that with him there are no little games."
Whether or not Gen. Zuniga’s failed coup, comical in brevity, was pure theater, it marks a serious escalation in Bolivia’s slide towards authoritarianism, testing the waters for dispensing intractable conflict in deliberative institutions with the “order” of naked force.
During his arrest, Gen. Zúñiga stated that his coup attempt was staged in coordination with Pres. Arce to boost his popularity.
Bolivia, never a dull moment.
🔵 #ANF | #Urgente Aprehenden al general Juan José Zúñiga y este denuncia que el presidente Luis Arce le pidió "preparar algo" para levantar su "popularidad".
5. Even before Gen. Zúñiga's assault on the presidential palace in La Paz, Bolivia's democracy was in a slow moving crisis, that today's apparent coup attempt portends.
2. Bolivia is in a constitutional crisis over the judicial branch. Judges terms ended last year, yet refuse to vacate, supported by Arce. New judicial elections are stalled in congress in procedural disputes that united Evo with opposition against Arce and acting judicial branch.
4. Many Bolivians from across the political spectrum suspect that Gen. Zúñiga rebellion is an "autogolpe" (self-coup) staged to prop up Arce's troubled govt and provide justification for his authoritarian line/slide.
1. President Luis Arce is in open and escalating dispute with former president Evo Morales over control of the ruling MAS party and candidacy for the 2025 elections. The party is thoroughly split. The constitutional court ruled that Evo is ineligible to run again.
Breaking my boycott of Elon Musk’s hate site to mention some background context on the tense political situation and apparent coup attempt in Bolivia that international journalists need to be aware of in their write ups.

#Bolivia Eduardo Rodríguez Veltzé is absolutely right that the unconstitutional trail being armed by the MAS government against Jeanine Añez for Sacaba and Senkata is first and foremost a defrauding of justice for the victims.
