📌“Transitional Nepal may face real dangers from rising religious populism,” cautions Dr. DB Subedi (@db_npl), lecturer in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Queensland, in an exclusive interview with the ECPS.

🔎 Dr. Subedi situates Nepal’s September 2025 uprising within broader South Asian patterns of youth-led revolts—from Sri Lanka’s Aragalaya (2022) to Bangladesh’s anti-quota protests (2024). Across these cases, he identifies structural drivers: generational exclusion, deepening inequality, and pervasive injustice—with social media functioning as both catalyst and connective tissue.

⚠️ Yet, he warns that Nepal’s fragile secularism makes it especially vulnerable to the instrumentalization of religion by authoritarian populists, a trajectory more dangerous than conventional elite capture because it fuses sectarian identity with populist nationalism.

🌱 At the same time, Dr. Subedi discerns in Gen Z’s unprecedented mobilization the embryonic signs of post-elitist democracy, rooted in inclusivity and participation rather than patronage or coercion. The outcome, he stresses, will hinge on whether the interim civilian government can deliver a legitimate, accountable transition to elections.
